Which drainage variant suits you best?

When deciding which option to choose for draining your washing machine, your main considerations will be installation costs, space in your laundry room and flood protection.

A standpipe is arguably the best connection, as a sink connection can cause flooding if the drain hose is not connected or the water cannot drain out of the sink due to a blockage, such as an item of clothing left in the sink. As long as you follow the instructions below, both the standpipe and the sink will work without any ill effects.

Although the specifications for the washing machine drain are the same for all washing machines, to be safe, you should check the manufacturer’s instructions for installing the drain hose, If the instructions differ, the deviation is usually one to two inches and relates to the following specifications:

A standpipe or sink should be higher than the washing machine overflow line, which is usually 30-36 inches (76-91 cm) or 18-30 inches (45-76 cm) above the trap.

Set pipe connection

The washing machine’s drain hose can be connected to the house’s rubbish heap via a stand pipe. The waste stack (also called the drain valve (DWV) system) is the pipe that runs throughout the house and collects waste water from toilets, sinks and appliances such as the washing machine.

A standpipe is long, vertical and has a U-shaped base (P-strainer) to prevent leaking washing machine water from flowing back into the washing machine and to prevent drains and sewage from passing through the washing machine drain hose.

A stand pipe can be placed next to the washing machine or built into the wall. If there is a hole drilled in the wall, the stand pipe should probably go there. The riser pipe must be installed according to the following specifications.

A hose guide (or angle bracket) must be installed at the end of the drain hose where it connects to the standpipe.

When installing the hose guide on the drain hose, there must be no more than 20 mm (0.8 in) of drain hose between the hose guide and the standpipe connection.

The connection of the drain hose to the standpipe must not be airtight (e.g. not secured with tape). Siphoning takes place with an airtight connection.

To secure the drain hose to the standpipe, a cable tie should be used to prevent an airtight connection.
If the standpipe and drain hose are not installed to these specifications, the washing machine will experience drainage problems, resulting in error codes, flooding and damage to the washing machine and your home. Sewage and sewage can also enter through the washing machine drain hose.

Sink connection

If you don’t have a standpipe, the washing machine drain hose can be placed over an adjacent sink. As long as you follow the specifications below and remember to drain the sink and unplug before using the washer, draining the washer in the sink will work just as well as a standpipe.

If the washing machine drains into a sink, the end of the sink or drain hose should be at least 99 cm (39 in) above the floor, like a standpipe, and have a maximum height of 244 cm (85 in).

A hose guide (or angle bracket) should be attached to the end of the drain hose so that it can drain into the sink without kinks. There must be more than 10 cm (4 inches) of drain hose between the hose guide and the end of the drain hose.
